It’s been a while now since I did some more fundamental sketches or gestures as I’ve been preoccupied with a project I’ll be showcasing in the next couple of posts. Still, I thought I’d show off some of my sketches, my studies and gestures, from earlier this year. These are all from before May 2023.
These sketches, compared to the ones I showed off from January, I’d say shows that I’ve been evolving. The time spent on the different studies varies, though it tends to vary from two to ten minutes. Generally, the more details or the clearer it is that I’ve redone an area, the longer I probably gave myself, but I’ve tried to set time limits, even if those limits are a bit longer than most gesture drawings.
I can feel myself learning more with every study session I do, in particular with three points;
- Construction – The proportions of the human body and perspectives when drawing
- Posing – Both learning what poses and expressions make me choose an image, how to put together those poses, and figuring out lines of action, symmetry and balance
- Updating my ‘visual library’ – Adding images I’ve studied into a little drawer in the back of my brain that I can imagine when I’m drawing and designing. From remembering styles and poses to “Oh, wait, I made this mistake when I drew that face, I need to do this instead”.
I don’t want this to be another rambling post, so I’ll just leave you with the rest of the sketches for this post, and I’ll see you in the next ones, where I’ll be going over the group project I’ve been working on lately!
These four are, if I remember correctly, all of Bukkit, a very talented non-binary cosplayer
These three are all practicing different concepts – Colour/lighting gradients, using hard lines to ‘sketch’ an image, and playing with negative space colour in what’s not there first) and complete contrast black/white
